A specialist assessment for children experiencing reading difficulties — checking for underlying visual anomalies that may be affecting their progress.
Many children who struggle with reading and school work are assumed to have a learning difficulty — when in fact an undetected vision problem may be the primary or contributing cause. Visual stress, binocular vision anomalies and convergence insufficiency can all cause reading difficulties, fatigue and symptoms that closely mirror dyslexia.
Our Visual Stress and Reading Clinic is a specialist vision assessment designed specifically for patients of any age who are experiencing difficulty with reading, or showing symptoms of dyslexia, to check thoroughly for underlying visual problems before other interventions are considered.
Early identification and treatment of a visual anomaly can transform a child's reading ability and school progress — often dramatically and quickly.
These symptoms may indicate an underlying visual problem that our clinic can assess and treat:
We use two specialist technologies to investigate visual stress and reading-related vision problems in depth.
For patients who continue to experience visual symptoms even after any underlying optical problems have been corrected, a Colorimetry assessment may be recommended. Using the Cerium Colorimeter, we can identify whether a specific colour of tinted lens or overlay can significantly reduce or eliminate symptoms.
Coloured overlays and precision tinted lenses have been shown to dramatically reduce the effects of visual stress in many patients — improving reading speed, comfort and stamina. Prescribed tints are available in precision-matched spectacle lenses for daily wear.
Our Clinical Eye Tracker accurately assesses eye movements and binocular vision function. It allows us to directly observe how a patient's eyes move as they read — in real time — studying the pattern, accuracy and coordination of eye movements with a level of precision that is impossible to achieve through standard clinical assessment alone.
This technology is particularly valuable for identifying subtle binocular vision anomalies, convergence difficulties and saccadic eye movement problems that may be contributing to reading difficulties without being apparent in a standard eye examination.
